Itinerary for Appalachian Arts Class Field Trip April 4-7, 2013

Thursday, April 4

Leave campus 8 AM sharp from in front of the Claypool-Young Art Building

Arrive in Berea 10 AM
     Visit the Kentucky Artisan Center with introductory talk by Gwen Heffner
     Berea College - Tour the Berea College Student Crafts Program with introductory talk by Director Tim Glotzbach
     Visit Berea Culture District (Kentucky Arts Council)
    Lunch
     Visit the studios of the Old Town Artisans Village
     Depart Berea 2 PM

Arrive Whitesburg 4:30-5:00 PM
     Check in at Super 8 Motel (377-a Hazard Road, Whitesburg, 606-633-8888)
     Dinner at Summit City (or see Summit City on myspace) or the Courthouse Cafe or other restaurants downtown (Dairy Queen)
     Presentation by MSU grad John Haywood at his studio in Whitesburg.

Friday, April 5
     Breakfast
     Tour Appalshop and meet with film makers Mimi Pickering and Elizabeth Barret (see short interview clip on PBS)
     Lunch at Here Comes the Bun, and a discussion there with local young artists, facilitated by Lacy Hale of EpiCentre Arts and Art Matters
     
Depart Whitesburg 1:00 PM

Arrive Asheville 4:30 PM

      Visit the  Folk Art Center with presentation by Southern Highland Craft Guild Librarian Deb Schillo
     Check in at the Comfort Suites Biltmore Square Mall  (890 Brevard Rd., Asheville, 828-665-4000). NOTE THAT THIS IS A 100% SMOKE FREE HOTEL.
     Dinner

Saturday, April 6
     Tour Asheville River Arts District with talk by Maria Andrade Troya
     Lunch in River Arts District (Clingman Cafe, Two Cousins Kitchen, Greene's Mini Mart and others)
     Tour downtown Asheville galleries and studios
     Dinner downtown
     Return to motel

Sunday, April 7
     Return to Morehead--tentative arrival : 3-5 PM
